In 2002, the city of Houston showed it was one of the leading forces in stadium technology again when they unveiled Reliant Stadium the home of the National Football League’s Houston Texans. The stadium is the first one in the NFL to have a retractable roof. The Texans hosted its first regular season game against the Dallas Cowboys in front of over 70,000 people. The first game had a college football game feel that has carried over to this day. In their first season the team averaged 70,469 for all eight of their home games.

The field was also the backdrop for Super Bowl XXXVIII that showcased one of the greatest Super Bowls of all time when the New England Patriots defeated the Carolina Panthers by a field goal with the clock running out.

Reliant Stadium has been the backdrop for a number NCAA Football games and bigger games like two Houston Bowls and one Big XII Championship game. The stadium is also one of the better soccer stadiums in the US and hosted a number of US national team soccer matches. The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo is also one of the many events that sells out Reliant Stadium on a regular basis.
