RCA Dome is Home to the: Indianapolis Colts
RCA Dome Opened: September 2, 1984
RCA Dome Capacity: 60,000
The Indianapolis Colts play all eight of their home
games at the RCA Dome each season. The RCA Dome is much
like the Metrodome in Minneapolis, the Pontiac Silverdome,
and the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York. They are
all air supported. The roof of the stadium is 257 tons
of Teflon covered fiberglass and uses 20 100hp fans to
keep the roof from coming down. The playing surface of
the RCA Dome is Astro-Turf. The dome became the first
domed stadium in the country to have the special Astro-Turf
12; before the Astro-Turf 12 the RCA Dome only had Astro-Turf
8 which was the original playing surface that was installed
when the stadium opened in 1984. Two levels of seats
circle the field and seat 60,000 people and the stadium
also showcases 104 luxury suites.
The original name of the RCA Dome was the Hoosier Dome.
In 1994, the RCA company came in and purchased the naming
rights of the domed stadium. The stadium was originally
built to be versitle enough to hold a number of different
conventions within it. The city of Indianapolis lured
the Colts over from Baltimore in 1984.
