The Miami Dolphins play half
of all of their games with in the pleasant borders
of Sun Life Stadium. The stadium has also played
host to the National Football Leagues event of the
year, the Super Bowl, on a number of occasions. The
one being in 1999 when the stadium was the setting
for John Elway’s last game when
his Denver Broncos matched up against the Atlanta Falcons.
It was a memorable game that ended with Elway hoisting
the trophy for the second straight year and then retiring
on top not long after that.
Sun Life Stadium is also the backdrop for the two
time World Series champion Florida Marlins. The Marlins
have been calling the stadium home since 1993 when they
played their first games there. The World Series has
been through the stadium twice and had seven games within
it. It was also the setting of the Marlins World Series
clinching game seven in 1997. In 2003 when the Marlins
won their last World Series they played three of the
six games at Sun Life Stadium against the New York
Yankees before the Marlins won the deciding game in New
York.
Former stadium names were Joe Robbie Stadium in 1987 to 1996, Pro Player Park in 1996, Pro Player Stadium in 1996 to 2005, Dolphins Stadium in 2005 to 2006, Dolphin Stadium in 2006 to 2009, Land Shark Stadium in 2009 to 2010 then finally n 2010 the name changed to Sun Life Stadium.
