Candlestick Park is the home field of
the National Football League’s very own San Francisco 49ers. It’s
been nestled in the heart of San Francisco and right
on the San Francisco Bay since 1960. It’s as much
a part of San Francisco as the hills or the trolley cars.
It has been the setting of many
an exciting football game. The 49ers have played six
NFC championship games, winning five of them, and three
NFC West divisional championship games. The 49ers game
that will be most remembered is the 1981 NFC Championship
when they faced off against the Dallas Cowboys and
the game was capped off by “The
Catch” where Joe Montana threw a pass to a fully
extended Dwight Clark.
Candlestick Park also used to be the
home of the San Francisco Giants. It has played host
to two Major League Baseball World Series and two All-Star
Games. During the ’89
World Series an earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter
Scale struck and postponed the game. Despite having 62,000
people in the stadium no one was injured thanks to Candlestick Park.
Former stadium names were 3Com Park at Candlestick Point in the years 1995-2002 San Francisco Stadium at Candlestick Point in the years 2002-2004 and Monster Park in the years 2004-2008. The name Candlestick Park was used in the beginning for the years 1960-1995 then in 2008 to the current date.
